Sometimes all you need to take a hobby or interest to the next level is a bit more knowledge. When it comes to enjoying wine, that’s what ‘Learning To Taste’ is all about. Led by Certified Sommelier and wine writer, Ashley Vaughters, we’ll taste at least 5 distinctly different wine styles and analyze what makes them so different. Guided in part by your Wine Aroma Wheel (yours to take home) you’ll learn about the interaction between your sense of taste and smell, as well as how to pinpoint the flavors and aromas that you love (or don’t love) in a glass of wine. We’ll also cover the basics of how to identify a wine that is ‘corked’ or otherwise gone bad and what to do about it. Seating limited; advance purchase required.

While enjoying a glass of wine can be effortless, more difficult is describing what we taste or smell in a wine. ‘Oakey,’ ‘spicey,’ ‘floral,’ and ‘jammy’ are among the dizzying number of wine terms that elude most of us. But being able to attach words to your wine experience is the key to understanding wine, including your likes and dislikes. Join us as we sip our way through the basics of wine, in a comfortable and unassuming atmosphere. This sommelier-led program is perfect for those who are new to wine, as well as wine aficionados who want to learn a bit more. We will sample 6 different wines, learning the key elements of aroma and taste. Each participant takes home a laminated Wine Aroma Wheel developed by UC Davis’ School of Viticulture and Enology, as well as a newfound understanding of wine.

We all have questions about wine – how to buy wine, how to age it, when is it corked… But so many of us hold back from asking them! Years of teaching have given certified Sommelier, Ashley Vaughters, a very good sense for what people want to know about wine, but have always been too afraid to ask. Let’s start the evening with those questions and explore many more! In this class, you will find out what ‘legs’ really mean as they grip the glass, if screwcaps are a good alternative to cork, the best temperature to set your home cellar as well as what terms like ‘organic’ and ‘biodynamic’ really indicate. This a class built around your very curiosities, so you simply must join! Bring your questions and your wine-adoring friends. We will enjoy a selection of wines in unraveling this tasty topic!
